By ROCHELLE A. SHENK, Correspondent Raymond H. "Ray" Carr has a passion for antique and classic vehicles, and his passion will be on display as part of the 12th Annual Artistry in Motion Vintage Grand Tour and Show on Sunday.

The event, which benefits the Lancaster Museum of Art, begins with a morning tour through the countryside and concludes on the grounds of Bridge Acres Stable, 1470 Hunsicker Road, with a vintage vehicle show from noon and 3 p.m.

A participant in several previous Artistry in Motion events, Carr has chosen to showcase a 1929 Good Humor ice cream truck this year.

"It doesn't have a refrigeration box, so you have to pack the ice cream bars in containers filled with dry ice," he explained. "That's how it would have been done in the 1920s and '30s before refrigeration units."

Carr, 84, lives in Chester Springs,  Chester County. He purchased the fully restored Good Humor truck in the mid-1990s at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Since then, he's taken it to charity events where he not only showcases the vehicle but also gives away Good Humor bars while dressed in a white shirt, black slacks, cap and bow tie.

"That's how the Good Humor men dressed," he said.

The truck's most recent appearance was April 25 at Mommy's Light 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk in Exton. Carr has also exhibited the Good Humor truck at the Concours d'Elegance in Radnor.

"I have a lot of fun with this truck," Carr said. "It's 80 years old and still running and still dispensing ice cream."

He added that over the winter the truck was repainted and hand-lettering was re-applied.

Carr selected the Good Humor truck for this year's Artistry in Motion event because it symbolizes a bit of Americana.

"It's a really nostalgic vehicle," he said. "Anybody that sees it can connect with it - they have some childhood memory of a similar type of vehicle traveling their neighborhood selling ice cream."

The current economic climate also influenced his decision to use the truck this year.

"We all need a bit of a lift right now, and this vehicle makes people smile," he said.

To Carr, the vehicle also represents  the "American Dream."

"The men who operated trucks like this were entrepreneurs," he noted. "Having that opportunity to be an entrepreneur and own your own business - whether it's a small business or a large one - is what America is all about."

Carr plans to participate in Artistry in Motion's morning tour and the vintage car show.

"The truck doesn't go really fast, but it will be fast enough for the tour," he said.

This year, the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum are working together for the annual Artistry in Motion event.

AACA Museum curator Jeff Bleimeister will lead the approximately 35-mile tour through the Lancaster County countryside en route to Bridge Acres Stable, situated along the picturesque Conestoga River near the Hunsicker Road covered bridge.

At Bridge Acres, the touring participants will join non-touring cars and motorcycles in the Artistry in Motion Vintage Show, which includes a parade of award winners, a men's and women's fashion show, gourmet dining, jazz, a raffle and an unparalleled opportunity to view numerous examples of the motor maker's art.

This year's featured marque is the British-made "MG" (Morris Garage), which revolutionized the American taste for sporty vehicles in the years immediately after World War II.

The 1947 MG that appears on this year's show literature will also be featured at the show and is from the AACA collection. Local artist Lisa Madenspacher has been commissioned to paint the featured MG.  Commemorative posters and notecards will be available through both museums.

General admission for ages 10 and up is $10. Children under 10 are admitted free. The Gourmet Luncheon is $55 per person, including admission, and seating is limited.
